The 29-year-old righty spent the past six seasons with the Marlins, posting a 4.60 ERA with a 6.1 K/9 rate in 142 games (98 starts). Miami non-tendered Ureña in November. He would have been arbitration eligible for the third time.
Ureña will provide some rotation depth for Detroit behind Matthew Boyd, Michael Fulmer, Spencer Turnbull, Casey Mize (the Tigers’ No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline) and Tarik Skubal (the Tigers’ No. 5 prospect).
The club’s pitching ranks were thinned a bit with the news that Alex Faedo (the Tigers’ No. 10 prospect) will undergo Tommy John surgery this month.
