After much debate as to whether the Cleveland Baseball Team would select a badass historical moniker (the Spiders was right there you guys), or something new, they made the official announcement of their re-brand on Friday morning with an admittedly pretty great video. Tom Hanks tells us of the spirit and strength of the city of Cleveland all while building up to the big reveal.
The new Cleveland name? The Guardians.
It’s not an out-of-nowhere selection, as it pays tribute to the Guardians of Traffic, two art deco sculptures on the Hope Memorial Bridge in Cleveland.
The team has likewise taken some of the art deco inspiration from the figures to incorporate into their new jersey and logo designs. Either that or whoever designed these is a really big fan of classic Jay Garrick Flash.
So now, 19 games a season, the Tigers will square off against division rivals the Guardians.
What do you think of the new Cleveland team name? Good, bad, ugly?
