Matthew Boyd and Eric Haase power Hens to victory on Tuesday

Bless You Boys

Toledo Mud Hens 2, St. Paul Saints 0 (box)

Matthew Boyd’s final rehab outing went well, and so did Eric Haase’s rehab appearance. Boyd one-hit the Saints for 4 13 innings, striking out six with no walks, to show the young’uns what big league pitching looks like. Meanwhile, Riley Greene led off the bottom of the first with a walk, and Eric Haase mashed a two-run shot—off former Tigers’ prospect Beau Burrows, no less—to provide the margin of victory on a night in which pitching ruled.

Boyd threw 56 pitches in this one. Will Vest, Locke St. John, and Bryan Garcia took it the rest of the way, with Garcia picking up the save. Spencer Torkelson and Ryan Kreidler each drew a walk but were held hitless in this one.

Haase: 1-2, R, 2 RBI, HR, 2 BB

Greene: 0-2, R, BB, 2 SO

Robson: 1-3, 3B, SO

Coming Up Next: RHP Ricardo Pinto (8-1, 3.97 ERA) takes on the Saints RHP Joe Ryan (4-3, 3.54 ERA) on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. EDT.

Erie SeaWolves 9, Bowie Baysox 7 (box)

Joey Wentz is still fighting his command, but he put together a decent outing and the offense did the rest on Tuesday night. Wentz tossed five innings of two-run ball, before turning it over to Brad Bass in the sixth. That almost undid the SeaWolves, as Bass was rocked for five runs, four earned, but a big ninth inning rally carried them over the top.

Erie jumped all over Bowie in the early going. Kerry Carpenter lifted a solo shot to left in the second inning, and then they came back for four in the third, taking advantage of several walks. Andre Lipcius had the big hit in the frame, a two-run single that made it 4-0 SeaWolves, before Andrew Navigato brought home one more with an RBI ground out.

From there, it was all Baysox for a couple innings, as they plated two against Wentz and then dropped the five-spot on Bass in the sixth. In the top of the ninth, Jon Rosoff singled to lead off the inning. Danny Woodrow grounded out, but two more singles from Drew Ward and Josh Lester plated a run and set Andre Lipcius up for some heroics. Lipcius drilled his seventh homer of the year, a three-run shot to right center field to put Erie back on top for good.

Lipcius: 2-5, R, 5 RBI, HR, SO

Carpenter: 2-4, 2 R, RBI, HR, BB, 2 SO

Wentz: 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 3 BB, 4 SO

Coming Up Next: First pitch on Wednesday is set for 6:35 p.m. EDT.

West Michigan Whitecaps at Lansing Lugnuts (postponed)

Colt Keith’s High-A debut will have to wait another day. They were rained out in Lansing on Tuesday as storms blasted much of the state, and will instead play two on Wednesday, with game one rescheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. EDT.

Lakeland Flying Tigers 12, Dunedin Blue Jays 2 (box)

Wilmer Flores racked up the punchouts in another strong outing for the Flying Tigers, and he got all the run support a pitcher could ask for in the middle innings to blow out the Jays on Tuesday. Flores punched nine tickets, throwing five innings of two run ball, one earned, with three walks allowed.

The Jays scored one in the top of the first, but the Tigers came back with one of their own in the bottom of the second inning. Nick Quintana was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and eventually scored on an Esney Chacon single. A couple wild pitches by Flores in the top of the fifth helped the Jays re-take a one-run lead. However, an inside the parker by Ben Malgeri, with Trei Cruz aboard ahead of him, gave the Flying Tigers the lead for good, and they went on to score three more runs in the inning, and they poured it on with two more in the sixth, and then a four-run eighth to win easily.

Malgeri: 1-2, 3 R, 2 RBI, HR, BB, SO

Liniak: 2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B, BB, SO

Quintana: 2-3, 3 R, 2B, BB, SO

Flores (W, 2-1): 5.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 9 SO

Coming Up Next: RHP Nick Davila (4-6, 3.48 ERA) gets the start in game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. EDT. Dunedin has yet to announce a starter.
