Torkelson homers twice in Toledo victory

Detroit Tigers

Spencer Torkelson continued his recent home run surge Wednesday as he went deep twice for the Toledo Mud Hens during the first game of a doubleheader against the Omaha Storm Chasers.

The No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 Draft is hitting .200 (11-for-55) through 14 games with Toledo, but each of his past three hits — and four of his past six — have left the yard. Torkelson’s four homers at this level have all come since Aug .25 and he has raised his OPS from .444 to .783 during that span.

For the season, Torkelson has 23 homers, 75 RBIs and a .934 OPS. He has now recorded a multihomer game at each of the three levels he has played this year: Low-A West Michigan, Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo.

The game also featured two more top-10 prospects in Storm Chasers’ shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and Mud Hens’ outfielder Riley Greene.

Witt (No. 3) picked up three singles in three at-bats, boosting his average to .304 through 38 games at Triple-A. Greene (No. 7) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. He doubled and scored on Torkelson’s two-run dinger in the first and then broke the game open with a bases-clearing triple in the seventh.
