CHICAGO — The news keeps getting worse for the Tigers.
Though there was nothing alarming with Tarik Skubal’s imaging done last week on his left arm, there is now some concern with his injury. The 25-year-old was transferred to the 60-day injured list ahead of Friday’s matchup against the White Sox.
The move, later confirmed by manager A.J. Hinch, affirms that Skubal’s 2022 season is over. He was 7-8 with a 3.52 ERA in 21 starts this season.
“We’re concerned about Tarik,” Hinch said. “He’s not going to pitch for the rest of the season, that much we know, which is why we put him on the 60-day injured list. The inflammation, the pain that he’s felt continued when he started throwing again.”
Skubal was originally listed on the 15-day IL when he left his start on Aug. 1 against the Twins early with left arm fatigue. But now the left-hander has experienced pain in his elbow.
“It’s more in the elbow area than the shoulder,” Hinch said. “That obviously brings significant concern for us, so we’ll wait for the doctor’s word. We’ve had a couple of doctors, our team doctors [and] another doctor look at it.”
Skubal is not currently with the team and is in Los Angeles to get another opinion on his arm. He will meet with Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Monday to determine the next steps of his recovery and whether he will need surgery.
“We’ll get him evaluated early next week and have a more detailed response when we get some more feedback,” Hinch said.
