Probable starting pitchers: Tigers RHP Matt Manning (2-3, 3.73 ERA) vs. White Sox LHP Lucas Giolito (10-9, 5.18).
Game notes: Both the Tigers and White Sox are dealing with prolonged absences. For the ChiSox, it’s manager Tony La Russa, who left the team suddenly on Aug. 30 to have a pacemaker installed. He has been cleared to travel again, but not to manage, leaving bench coach Miguel Cairo in charge. The ChiSox have gotten hot under Cairo, going 11-4 and slowly crawling back into the AL Central race.
The Tigers, meanwhile, have been missing their offense for most of the season; their two shutouts in their past four games brought them to 21 on the season, five short of the franchise record (set in 1904) and tied for the most by any American League team in the DH era (dating back to 1973). Chicago’s Giolito has held the Tigers scoreless in three of his 17 career starts against the franchise, including a four-inning outing on April 8.
