We don’t yet know who the Detroit Tigers will hire as general manager, but we do know who will have a chief role in making that decision. And the city will get to know him soon.
Scott Harris, the new president of baseball operation for the Tigers, will be introduced 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Comerica Park. Harris, at the ripe old age of 34, had spent the previous three seasons as the San Francisco Giants general manager. Before, he was part of the Theo Epstein staff that won the 2016 World Series with the Chicago Cubs. The Tigers are working on a much shorter drought than the North Siders were, but one the Ilitch family has been trying to end for decades.

The Tigers announced the hiring Monday, a little more than a month after firing vice president and general manager Al Avila. Avila guided the franchise during an ugly rebuild the past half-decade and the Tigers were expected to near a .500 record in 2022. But the team is on pace for another 100-loss season as free-agency signings and draft picks have underwhelmed. And that’s not to mention the lopsided (in a bad way, if you’re a Tigers fan) trades Avila consummated during his tenure.
It’s unclear how Ilitch will rebuild the front office, but Harris will have a major influence in improving an organization that has fallen behind in international scouting and struggled to develop All-Stars for its major-league club.
