Diamondbacks at Tigers, 10:10 a.m., Comerica Park

Diamondbacks RHP Ryne Nelson (2-3, 5.40) vs. Tigers LHP Matthew Boyd (3-4, 5.57).

Nelson gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Braves in his most recent start, an outing that he said felt like a step in the right direction despite the end results. … Nelson was more effective early in the game against the Braves, with livelier stuff, than has often been the case in starts this season. … He elicited only five swinging strikes in the outing and has reached double digits in whiffs in only two of his 12 starts. His whiff rate ranks in the 8th percentile among major league pitchers. … After a year in Seattle, Boyd is back with the Tigers, whom he was with from 2015-2021. … He turned in a sharp outing in his most recent start, giving up one run in five innings, with no walks and nine strikeouts, against the White Sox. That snapped a rough stretch of six starts in which he had a 7.06 ERA. … Boyd primarily throws a fastball (91.3 mph average velocity), slider, change-up and curveball. He occasionally mixes in sinkers.
