Hens bullpen pitches six scoreless innings in win

Allentown, PA The Toledo Mud Hens take a 5-1 over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs after six dominant innings from the bullpen.

The Mud Hens pounced on the IronPigs early, with a leadoff double from Parker Meadows then Nick Solak followed up with a triple down the right field line to score the game and the Mud Hens’ first run. Justyn-Henry Malloy followed Solak with a single to right field that scored the Mud Hens’ second run to grab an early 2-0 lead.

Matt Manning made another rehab start for the Mud Hens. The IronPigs fought back in the bottom of the first inning after a leadoff single from Jake Cave came around to score after a throwing error allowed Cave to get second. Another singled moved Cave to third and a groundball scored him to make it 2-1 after the first inning.

T.J. Zeuch was the starter on the mound for the IronPigs ad after a two-run first inning, Zeuch settled in pitching a scoreless second inning.

Parker Meadows led off with a single in the top of the third inning, then a groundball allowed Meadows to get to second with one out. Justyn-Henry Malloy drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one out, then Tyler Nevin lined a single to left field to score Parker Meadows and go up 3-1 in the third inning.

Matt Mannings‘ day finished after pitching a scoreless third inning, finishing his day pitching three innings, allowing five hits, and striking out two batters.

Sam Clay replaced Manning in the fourth and pitched a scoreless frame to keep the Mud Hens up two.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Mud Hens quickly loaded up the bases with no outs after three straight singles. Andrew Knapp then singled up the middle to score one run, then Michael Paperski hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score the second run of the inning and make it a 5-1 Mud Hens lead.

Beau Brieske came into pitch the sixth inning while the Mud Hens had a four-run lead. Brieske shut down the sixth inning, retiring the side in order and recording one strikeout.

Brenan Hanifee, a usual starter for the Mud Hens, entered the game out of the bullpen to pitch the seventh inning. Hanifee got into some trouble loading the bases with two outs but was able to escape the jam without giving up a run and preserving the four-run lead.

The Mud Hens bullpen pitched a combined six scoreless innings to keep the IronPigs offense at a minimum and secure the 5-1 victory for Toledo.
