Toledo, OH The Toledo Mud Hens defeated the St. Paul Saints 6-0 in a shut out victory.

Matt Manning made a rehab start in Toledo for the Mud Hens as he progressively work towards his return to Detroit. Manning struck out the first batter he faced but then walked the next to St.Paul batters to put runners on first and second with one outs. Manning stuck out the next batter he faced then got a pop up to the the first basemen in foul ground to bounce back after the walks and end the inning.

Cody Laweryson started the game on the mound for the Saints. Parker Meadows hustled out an infield single in his first at bat of the game, then stole second on the next pitch to himself in scoring position. Catcher Jair Camargo made a throwing error that put the ball in centerfield and allowed Meadows to get on third base with no outs. Nick Solak grounded a ball to the shortstop that allowed Meadows to score from second and the Mud Hens to take 1-0 lead in the first.

Manning continued to look sharp in the second inning, striking out the first two batters he faced. With two outs, Manning allowed a walk to put Anthony Prato on first, but before manning through a pitch to the next batter, Manning picked off Prato at first to end the inning.

Laweryson bounced back in the second inning for the Saints, after allowing two walks in the inning, Laweryson was able to get the outs when he needed to keep the Hens off the board.

Due to an issue on the mound, Matt Manning was not given the full time in between innings to get his arm loose. In the third inning, two walks and an infield singled allowed the bases to be loaded with no outs for the Saints. Manning got a strikeout for the first out, then a line drive caught by John Valente at second and quick toss to first allotted in a double play to end the inning and keep the Saints off the board.

Parker Meadows led off the bottom of the third inning with a single to left field to get the offense going for the Mud Hens. Meadows moved to second on ground ball, the Justyn-Henry Malloy singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Tyler Nevin hit a sacrifice fly out to left field that scored Meadows and gave the Mud Hens a 2-0 lead after three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth inning Connor Sadzeck got into some trouble with two outs, walking a batter to put runners on first and second. The Saints went to Alex Scherff out the bullpen to get the final out and that’s exactly what he did.

The Mud Hens went to Billy Lescher to start the fifth inning, replacing Matt Manning in the ball game. Lescher gave up a one-out triple to Elliot Soto, but the next batter grounded a ball back to Lescher which held the runner at third, then Lescher finished the inning with a strikeout to keep the Saints off the board.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Scherff was able to get two quick outs for the Saints. Tyler Nevin prolonged the inning with a solo home run that was slugged over the right field wall to make it a 3-0 Mud Hens lead.

Brenan Hanifee entered the game out of the bullpen for the Mud Hens to start the sixth inning. Hanifee made easy work of the Saints, striking out all three batters he faced in order.

Hanifee pitched three scoreless innings for the hens and took the game into the ninth inning with a 3-0 lead for the Mud Hens.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Hens were to add some insurance to their three-run lead, loading up the bases with no outs. Corey Joyce roped a double down the line that scored two more Mud Hen runners to make it 5-0. Later in the inning, Parker Meadows hit a sacrifice fly out to center field that scored Andrew Knapp to cap of a three-run bottom of the eighth inning to go up 6-0.

Miguel Diaz entered the game in the ninth inning and shut down the Saints lineup to secure the 6-0 shut out victory over the Saints.
