Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matthew Boyd exited Monday night’s game against the Texas Rangers in the bottom of the first inning with an apparent injury.
On just the 15th pitch of his outing, Boyd’s delivery sailed to the backstop. But he was quickly visited by manager A.J. Hinch and head trainer Ryne Eubanks. After a conversation, Boyd came out of the game and was replaced by Will Vest.
Boyd, re-signed by the Tigers after one season away, seemed to be the only starter to not be bit by the injury bug this season. On Tuesday, the team will get Matt Manning back. Casey Mize is out of the season after arm surgery late last season. Tarik Skubal is on the road to recovery after season-ending surgery last year. Eduardo Rodriguez is making progress in his recovery from a ligament injury on his pitching hand.
