Game notes: At long last, Tarik Skubal is ready to make his return to the Tigers. And it couldn’t come at a better time.

The young lefty has been recovering from flexor tendon surgery and hasn’t pitched yet in the big leagues in 2023. But the process has gone about as well as the team could hope for, and Skubal is now ready to make his debut after a couple of rehab starts with Triple-A Toledo.

Skubal had a really nice season going in 2022 before he got hurt. In 21 starts, Skubal had a 3.52 ERA while allowing only nine home runs, which is the same amount he gave up in his rookie season in only eight games.

For his first start, Skubal gets to face the worst team in the league this year. The A’s were on pace to be a historically bad team, but actually picked it up a bit in June, going 10-16.

The Tigers have won four of their last seven games, including a series win over the Colorado Rockies. The elevation certainly didn’t hurt, but the Tigers won their last game 14-9 and hit five home runs, including two grand slams.
