The Toledo Mud Hens defeated the Louisville Bats 9-4 on Wednesday night. Toledo is now 4-4 in the second half and 37-45 overall.

Bryan Sammons started the game for Toledo. In 4.1 innings he gave up two runs on four hits, with four walks and five strikeouts. Blair Calvo came in to replace Sammons in the fifth inning and escaped a bases loaded jam in both the fifth and sixth innings without giving up a run. Trey Wingenter threw a clean seventh inning with a hit and a strikeout.

Riley Greene made his second start of his current MLB rehab assignment with the Mud Hens. He went 0-4 on Monday in Columbus, but tonight finished 5-5 with a double, four singles, two runs scored, and an RBI. Greene was one of five Hens hitters to have multiple hits tonight. Parker Meadows and Andre Lipciusreached base four times each, both going 2-3 with two walks apiece.

Parker Meadows got the Hens on the board in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI triple that scored Riley Greene. Andre Lipcius was the next batter, and he came through to score Meadows with an RBI single to give the Hens an early 2-0 lead.

The Hens brought 12 batters to the plate in a bizarre sixth inning. With runners on first and third and no outs, Donny Sands thought he scored Andre Lipcius on a sacrifice fly. However, the third base umpire called a balk on Bats reliever Shea Spitzbarth right as the previous pitch had been thrown, which nullified the play but still allowed Lipcius to score from third. Confusion arose when Sands was still up to bat after it appeared he had already recorded an out.

The Bats looked like they might have been able to escape the inning with minimal damage after Sands eventually flew out and Johan Camargo did the same on the very next pitch. The Hens offense was not quite done, however, as they rattled off four straight singles, followed by a walk and another single. They totaled seven singles and two walks the inning, and the game went from being tied 2-2 to the Hens holding an 8-2 lead.

Garrett Hill, who was called down to Toledo earlier today to make room for Eduardo Rodriguez’s callup in Detroit, struggled in the eighth inning. He gave up two home runs and a double to begin the inning but got out of it without any further damage, thanks a couple of good defensive plays by shortstop Nick Maton. Braden Bristo closed out the game with a clean ninth inning.

The Hens have now won three straight and will face the Bats again tomorrow at 7:05 P.M. right here at Fifth Third Field.
