Detroit Tigers’ TV and radio calls of historic no-hitter vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Tigers on Saturday threw the ninth no-hitter in franchise history in a 2-0 win over Toronto at Comerica Park and first-ever with multiple pitchers.

Yet neither of the team’s regular play-by-play men were on the call when third baseman Zach McKinstry fielded a slow chopper from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and threw to Spencer Torkelson at first base for the final out.

The Tigers held a “Players Only” telecast on Bally Sports Detroit featuring Craig Monroe, Todd Jones and Dan Petry. Matt Shepard, the regular play-by-play announcer, was off.

And longtime radio voice Dan Dickerson was off, with Greg Gania filling in. Gania is a broadcaster and assistant general manager for the Tigers’ Double-A affiliate Erie SeaWolves in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Perhaps the Tigers (39-49) should try this arrangement more often.

Below are the broadcast calls from both TV and radio, and a two-minute clip of all 27 outs.

“History, guys we have just witnessed history!” Monroe exclaimed after the final out.

“No-hitter!” Gania said after describing the play for listeners. “For the first time in franchise history, the Tigers have thrown a no-hitter, a combined no-hitter.”
