Game notes: The most exciting player in the sport is coming to Detroit for a three-game series.
Shohei Ohtani is accomplishing things this season that many thought would never be possible. He leads the MLB in home runs (36), triples (seven), and slugging (.674), and oh yeah, he’s also one of the best pitchers in the sport. Ohtani is the clear favorite for MVP in the American League and some have argued he’s having the best season ever, based on his wins above replacement and what he provides the Angels on both offense and defense.
Unfortunately for baseball fans in the area, Ohtani is not scheduled to pitch during their trip to Detroit. Normally that would be a major bummer with any normal pitcher, as you wouldn’t even get to see him play. But not Ohtani. Fans in the area who make the trip to Comerica Park will still get to see Ohtani mash baseballs, which he’s done better than anyone in baseball this year.
The Tigers and Angels will start their three-game series with a game at 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday. If you’re unable to make that game, Ohtani and the Angels will also be at Comerica Park for a game at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday and a day game on Thursday that starts at 1:10 p.m.
Tickets for the game on Tuesday are fairly attainable, with seats listed as low as $16, with similar prices for the games on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Tigers will have arguably their best pitcher on the mound for the first showdown with Ohtani. Eduardo Rodriguez has a 2.69 ERA this season, which would be the best of his already impressive MLB career. After missing several weeks with a finger injury, Rodriguez is starting to look like himself again. He was rocked in his first outing back from injury on July 5 against the Oakland Athletics but has allowed just two runs in his last two starts which have spanned 12 innings.
Ohtani has 10 career at-bats against E-Rod and is hitting .200 with one home run.
Meanwhile, the Tigers will face righty Griffin Canning, who struck out 12 batters in his most recent outing against the New York Yankees. Batters are hitting .240 against him this year, which is slightly below his career average. Canning has a nice record of 6-4 this year, but is 0-1 in his two starts in July.
