Game notes: Tigers pitcher Matt Manning has struggled quite a bit recently, allowing seven, eight, and nine hits in his last three starts. That’s led to a combined 19 runs allowed by Manning in those three games, all of which ended up being losses.

Things started going wrong for Manning when he was pulled after two innings against the San Diego Padres because of a rain delay. He hasn’t been able to find his rhythm since. The Tigers decided to err on the side of caution with Manning and treated it as a typical start, giving him multiple days of rest before he pitched again against the Los Angeles Angels. Factor that in with a long break for the All-Star game, and it’s reasonable to assume that Manning simply got out of sync.

Prior to the rain delay for the Padres game, Manning was cooking. He started a combined no-hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays and only allowed two runs in 5⅔ innings against the Kansas City Royals. At that point, Manning had not lost a game since April 11, when he was injured. Manning is still young and finding his groove, but the Tigers will certainly be looking for him to turn it around in the final weeks.

Meanwhile, the Tigers will face Brayan Bello, a 24-year-old righty who’s made 19 starts this season and 30 in his career. Bello may be young, but the Red Sox are not afraid to use him for extended stretches. Bello has reached at least six innings pitched in his past three starts and 10 of his last 11. That includes four occasions when he’s completed seven innings, something that’s fairly rare these days for a pitcher who hasn’t even turned 25.

Bello throws his fastball 57% of the time, with an average velocity of 95 mph, which ranks in the 73rd percentile in the MLB.
