TOLEDO – The Toledo Mud Hens defeated the Columbus Clippers 4-1 Friday night at Fifth Third Field.
The pitching matchup consisted of Sawyer Gipson-Long for the Mud Hens and Peyton Battenfield for the Clippers.

The pitching matchup consisted of Sawyer Gipson-Long for the Mud Hens and Peyton Battenfield for the Clippers.
Tyler Freeman would draw a walk to begin the ballgame. Gipson-Long would get Bryan Lavastida to lineout to get his first out. Back-to-back singles to left by Johnathan Rodriguez and Jhonkensy Noel would load the bases for the Clippers. Gipson-Long would pick-up back-to-back strikeouts of George Valera and Zack Collins to end the inning and escape the jam.
Parker Meadows would greet Battenfield with a leadoff double. Meadows would move up to third on a flyout by Justyn-Henry Malloy. Meadows would be erased at the plate on a fielder’s choice that allowed Colt Keith to reach. Tyler Nevin and Wenceel Perez would hit back-to-back singles, but Keith would get thrown out trying to score to end the inning.
Angel Martinez would single and swipe second base to begin the second inning. Martinez would be stranded after a Raynel Delgado strikeout, a Chris Roller flyout and a Freeman groundout would end the inning.
Battenfield would need just seven pitches to retire the Mud Hens in the bottom of the second inning. Eddys Leonard, Isan Diaz and Michael Papierski would each groundout to a middle infielder in the inning. Leonard to second base and both Diaz and Papierski to shortstop.
Gipson-Long would retire the Clippers in order in the third inning, getting Lavastida to groundout before striking out both Rodriguez and Noel to end the inning.
Battenfield would begin the third inning with a lineout from Joe Rizzo on the first pitch. Meadows would draw a one-out walk to try to get the Hens on the board. Meadows would be stranded after a Malloy strikeout and a Keith flyout.
Valera would draw a leadoff walk to begin the fourth inning for the Clippers. Gipson-Long would strikeout Collins, get Martinez to flyout and Delgado to groundout to end the inning.
Nevin would draw a leadoff walk in the fourth inning, but would be immediately erased on a double play off the bat of Perez. Leonard would double, but would be stranded after a Diaz flyout would end the inning.
Roller would hit a leadoff single and swipe second base to begin the fifth inning. Gipson-Long would strand Roller after striking out Freeman, getting Lavastida to groundout and striking out Rodriguez to end the inning. That would end the night for Gipson-Long who would leave with a no-decision after pitching 5.0 innings, allowing four hits, two walks and eight strikeouts.
Battenfield would need just nine pitches to get through the Mud Hens in the fifth inning. Papierski would groundout, Rizzo would flyout and Meadows would popout to end the inning. That will end Battenfield’s night with a no-decision after 5.0 innings pitched, allowing four hits, two walks and one strikeout.
Zach Logue would enter to pitch the sixth inning for the Mud Hens. Logue would get Noel to lineout and Valera to groundout for the first two outs. But then, down came the rain and the tarp would quickly cover the field in Toledo. Aneurys Zabala would enter after the lengthy 1:18 rain delay and would strikeout Collins to end the inning. Logue would finish with 0.2 inning pitched, retiring both batters he faced.
Cody Morris would enter to pitch the sixth inning for Columbus. Micah Pries would enter the game to play first base, moving Noel to third base and removing Freeman from the game. Morris would walk Malloy and Keith would wallop the first pitch he saw out of the ballpark to put the Mud Hens up 2-0. Nevin would flyout for the first out of the inning. Perez would walk, but would be erased on a double play off the bat of Leonard to end the inning.
Zabala would return for the seventh inning. Martinez would hit a leadoff single and reach second on a error by Leonard to put the Clippers in scoring position. Delgado would reach on a fielder’s choice, allowing Martinez to advance to third. Delgado would swipe second base, but would move to third and Martinez would score after the throw sailed into centerfield, making it 2-1 Mud Hens. Zabala would proceed to mow down the Clippers to escape the jam. Roller struck out swinging, Pries struck out on a foul tip and Lavastida struck out swinging to end the inning. That would close the book on Zabala after pitching 1.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit and four strikeouts. Zabala would get the win, improving to 7-2 on the season.
Morris would return to pitch in the seventh inning. He would be greeted by a leadoff home run by Diaz, putting the Mud Hens up 3-1. Morris would strikeout both Papierski and Rizzo for the first two outs. Morris would follow with back-to-back walks to Meadows and Malloy to put the Mud Hens back on the bases. That would chase Morris, as Randy Labaut would enter to finish the inning. Labaut would strikeout Keith to end the inning and escape the jam. That would close the book on Morris after 1.2 innings pitched, allowing three runs on two hits (two home runs), four walks and two strikeouts. Morris would take the loss, falling to 2-1 on the season. That would close the book on Labaut after 0.1 inning, striking out the lone batter he faced.
Braden Bristo would enter to pitch next. Rodriguez would reach on an error, but he would be stranded. Bristo would mow down the Clippers striking out Noel, Valera and Collins all swinging. Bristo would pick up his second hold after 1.0 inning pitched with three strikeouts.
James Karinchak would enter to pitch the eighth inning for the Clippers. Nevin would club a leadoff double. Perez would flyout for the first out. Leonard would come through with a RBI single to make it 4-1 Mud Hens. However, Leonard would be thrown out at second during the play. Karinchak would get Diaz to flyout to end the inning.
Miguel Diaz would enter to close it out for the Mud Hens. Diaz would strikeout Martinez, get Delgado to groundout and would strikeout Roller to seal a 4-1 win for the Mud Hens. Diaz would pick up his 12th save of the season, pitching 1.0 inning with two strikeouts.
