The Detroit Tigers were awarded the 11th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, which they used on Sunday evening to select high school shortstop prospect Bryce Rainer. The bat-first infield prospect was widely expected to be off the board before the Tigers would get a chance to pick him, and the pick was unanimously well-received among fans and local and national media.
At the conclusion of Day 1 of the draft, the Tigers had made two more selections, high school pitchers Owen Hall and Ethan Schiefelbein. These players are an excellent fit for the Tigers from a developmental standpoint. Hall, who could use some refinement with his pitching mechanics, and Schiefelbein, a touch and feel lefty with some velocity upside, match nicely with the talents of minor league pitching coordinator Gabe Ribas and his staff. You can read our instant analysis of each pick here, here, and here, respectively.
The total cash value of the Tigers’ allotted draft bonus pool is $11,921,800, which is roughly middle of the pack among all MLB teams. There’s some early reporting from Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic that Detroit has already settled on a rough figure for Rainer’s signing bonus, which will be higher than the slot value of the 11th pick.
Between that nugget of information and Hall’s predraft reputation as a tough sign away from his Vanderbilt commitment, it’s not easy to see how the Tigers will be able to make everything work if they continue aggressively targeting high school talent as they did last in year’s draft. They seem to be more concerned with drafting the best players available than finessing the current cash situation.
We’ll do our best to update this tracker with each of the Tigers’ picks as soon as they roll in, with analysis shortly afterward about the most notable players selected.
