Casey Mize’s rehab start goes well but the Mud Hens lose anyway

Bless You Boys

Casey Mize’s rehab outing went off without a hitch, but Austin Bergner struggled and the Hens offense was pretty quiet to go down two games to one in the series.

Mize was up to 98.2 mph with his fourseamer, and spun 2 13 scoreless innings. He threw just 35 pitches, so he’ll need at least one more outing to stretch out. He did throw all four pitches and got several whiffs on the splitter while mixing in the knuckle curve a fair amount as well.

Unfortunately, Berger took over and gave up a pair of runs in the third, and two more in the sixth. Angel Reyes gave up two more.

The Hens got a run on a Jace Jung double and a Justice Bigbie single in the fourth, but Kerry Carpenter went 0-for-3, while Spencer Torkelson went 0-for-4 with a walk. The rest of the lineup didn’t fare too much better until adding on a pair of runs on a Riley Unroe double in the bottom of the ninth before the Shrimp shut the door.

Leonard: 2-3, R, 2B, BB

Unroe: 2-2, 2 RBI, 2B

Mize: 2.1 IP, 0 R, 3 H, BB, 2 K

Erie SeaWolves at New Hampshire Fisher Cats (postponed)

They were rained out in New Hampshire on Thursday. They’ll play two on Saturday to makeup the rain out.

Beloit Sky Carp 5, West Michigan Whitecaps 1 (box)

The Sky Carp had their way with Whitecaps pitching in this one.

Bryce Tassin handled the first inning as an opener and gave up a run. Colin Fields then took over as the real starter and spun five innings of two run ball with seven strikeouts. He continues to show a little something despite a fastball that rarely tops 92 mph. Lefty Jake Miller made his High-A debut, and that didn’t go too well either. Miller allowed a pair of runs in the seventh inning.

The lone Whitecaps run came in the fourth. Max Clark led off with a single and Max Anderson followed with one of his own. With two outs, Luke Gold singled Clark home, but that was all they’d get.

Kevin McGonigle and Thayron Liranzo had the night off.

Clark: 1-3, R, BB, CS

Gold: 2-4, RBI, 2 K

Lakeland Flying Tigers 1, Clearwater Threshers 0 (box)

Pitching ruled the day in this one. Despite seven walks and six hits, the Flying Tigers could not score. That’s probably better than getting three-hit by a bullpen game from the Flygers.

Zack Lee spun two no-hit innings with two strikeouts in a short outing for him. Duque Hebbert no-hit the Threshers for three more frames with a pair of strikeouts. CJ Weins struck out four in a pair of innings with just a single allowed.

Meanwhile the offense wasn’t doing much of anything. They went 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Eiker Huizi handled the eighth and most of the ninth. He gave up a single to open the ninth inning, collected a strikeout, and then drilled the next hitter in the back with a fastball. Another wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third before Huizi collected another strikeout. At that point they turned to Patrick Pridgen with Huizi laboring a bit, and he managed to get the last out of the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, outfielder Nomar Fana, just up from the Complex League, doubled to right. The Threshers intentionally walked Clayton Campbell, and then unintentionally walked Cristian Santana and David Smith to lose the game 1-0.

Hebbert: 3.0 IP, 2 K
