The Detroit Tigers came through on Sweet Lou Whitaker’s special day with a convincing 9-1 win over the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Garrett Hill played with fire over 5 2⁄3 frames but managed to surrender just a single run — a solo home run — in an outing reminiscent of his solid major league debut,

I’m going to keep this one short and sweet, mostly because a bunch of the BYB staff were at the park for the meet-up, and the focus for the day feels like it should mostly stick with Lou Whitaker’s jersey retirement. That said, there was a game, and the Tigers must have felt like the
The retirement of Lou Whitaker’s jersey number was a moment many Tigers fans thought might never come. Historically, the Tigers have been notoriously stingy in terms of number retirement, only giving the special distinction to former players or managers who found their way into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. To date, there were only
Happy Saturday, BYB readers. This August we’re starting a new weekly column to help keep you in the loop of things you might have missed. We know that with the Tigers not being so great, the motivation to stay connected isn’t always there, so we figured every Saturday or Sunday we’d give to a weekly
The big day is here! After years of waiting, the great “Sweet” Lou Whitaker will finally have his number retired and hoisted up on Comerica Park’s wall. The ceremony was originally set for 2020 to honor the second baseman but the COVID pandemic foiled those plans along with Bless You Boys’ meet-up event. Now two
Iowa Cubs 5, Toledo Mud Hens 4 (box) The dominance of Beau Brieske in a rehab start, and a big day for Spencer Torkelson weren’t enough as the bullpen faltered on Friday night. Brieske punched out eight in 4.1 innings of work, throwing 66 pitches. He allowed a run on three hits and should be
The Tigers have probably adjusted pretty well to losing series this year, where it seems like every new competitor faced, the Tigers manage to eke out one win in a series, while losing the rest. As fans, we cling to the highlight reel plays (thanks, Riley, you keep it interesting!) and the handful of exciting

The Detroit Tigers have started the month of August sluggishly, losing three of their four games including Thursday night’s weekend series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. The home squad took the 6-2 loss after another lackluster performance overall, as Drew Hutchison surrendered four runs — only two earned — in what was a decent
Before we get to Thursday’s games, there were a couple of assignments for the 2022 draft class announced on Thursday. Infielder Jace Jung, the Tigers’ selection with the 12th overall pick, has been assigned to High-A West Michigan. The slugging second baseman should slot right into the lineup there. Second round shortstop Peyton Graham has
The Tigers fell 6-2 in game one of a four-game set from Comerica Park with a generally lackluster effort from the home team. Drew Hutchison got out to a solid start in this one. He issued a leadoff walk to Yandy Diaz, and was fortunate that a Brandon Lowe drive to center was hauled in
Retirement is sounding like more of a realistic possibility following the 2022 season for Miguel Cabrera, according to multiple reports out of Comerica Park on Thursday. Cabrera, who is 39 years old, is currently dealing with a knee injury and, according to Detroit head coach A.J. Hinch, is “not doing well.” Said Cabrera: “I gotta
In another lost season, it feels a bit precious to say the Tigers have had a rough week, but it’s hard to describe it any other way. The trade deadline passed with just a whimper of defeat from the front office. Tarik Skubal wisely chose to inform the team that his arm was feeling excessive
The 2022 MLB Trade Deadline passed on Tuesday with a definitive whimper for the Detroit Tigers. Small predictable moves were made with unimpressive returns. Results added to the general disgust felt by many after a season holding some promise has now officially dwindled into a smoldering ash heap of disappointment.
Less than an hour before the trade deadline passed the Detroit Tigers traded Michael Fulmer to the Minnesota Twins for RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long. There were no long plane rides for Fulmer, all he had to do was walk across the field. At the time of the trade, it seemed like an underwhelming return. The Tigers
The rubber match of a mid-week three-game series between the Tigers and Twins in Minnesota saw the Twins début of Michael Fulmer, a whole bunch of strikeouts of Tiger hitters, and a 4-1 Twins win to clinch the three-game series. Tyler Alexander took the mound for Detroit, coming off a four-inning start in Toronto last

While yesterday was the trade deadline, the news didn’t stop there for the Detroit Tigers. Shortly after their 5-3 win over the Minnesota Twins, they announced that four minor league prospects were being promoted.
Despite all of the anticipation leading up to the trade deadline on Tuesday, the Detroit Tigers were relatively quiet, trading Robbie Grossman to the Atlanta Braves and Michael Fulmer to the Minnesota Twins. The Fulmer deal was one of those that saw the player shipped off to the team his now-former club was facing. Reporters
While the trade deadline was pretty much a non-factor for the Tigers, it was a pretty busy day down on the farm. By the end of the evening, four prospects had been promoted, while a new Tigers acquisition received his first assignment with the organization. The Tigers announced after Tuesday night’s action that shortstop—third baseman
