Atlanta Braves 0 at Arizona Diamondbacks 2, F — Cy Young Award winners Randy Johnson and Greg Maddux faced off in the Series opener at Bank One Ballpark. Though Maddux would only give up two runs in seven innings, he would be outdone by Johnson, who pitched a complete game shut-out with eleven strikeouts.
New York Yankees 1 at Boston Red Sox 13, F — The highly anticipated match-up between Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez ended in disappointment for the Yankees as Clemens lasted only two innings after giving up four runs, while Martinez allowed only two hits in seven innings pitched.
